The Scottish Golf Charitable Trust is delighted to announce the launch of a new bursary fund to help Scots meet the costs of entering the world-renowned Helen Holm Scottish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship.

The Trust was established to support the objectives of Scottish Golf – to grow and diversify the game, and to remove barriers to golf where financial circumstances are a challenge.

Now the Helen Holm Bursary Fund has been set up thanks to the patronage of the Holm family.

The family has been long-standing supporters of women’s golf in Scotland and Scottish Golf, the governing body for the club and amateur game. The new fund will be administered through the Trust.

The late Helen Holm was one of the finest female golfers that Scotland has ever produced.

In her pomp, Holm won the Scottish Women’s Amateur title five times from 1930 and the Women’s Amateur twice, as well as representing GB&I in the 1936 and 1938 Curtis Cups.

Two years after her death in 1971, the event now known as the Scottish Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship was named in her honour. It is played annually at Royal Troon Golf Club and attracts a top-class international field to the Ayrshire coast.

Now, thanks to a generous donation from the Holm family following the death of Helen’s son, Michael, two female Scottish golfers a year will each receive £500 to help cover expenses related to participation in the three-day event.

Applications are now open.

The first two recipients will be announced ahead of the 2025 championship which takes place from 18-20 April.

Robbie Clyde, CEO of Scottish Golf, said: “The family have been tremendous advocates for women’s golf in Scotland for decades and this new bursary will ensure the legacy of Helen Holm continues for many years to come.

“I had the privilege of meeting members of the Holm family last year at Troon during the championship and it was evident just how much pride they take in supporting the next generation of players through their ongoing association with this event.

“From reading about her achievements, it’s clear that Helen was a pioneer for women’s golf in Scotland as she blazed a trail on the course.

“It is entirely fitting that her name continues to be associated with breaking down barriers to play in the modern era.

“The two recipients who benefit from funding each year will, I’m sure, be inspired by learning about Helen’s career and thankful for the ongoing generosity of her family.”
